Horizon Shipbuilding wins contract to build towboat for the Army Corps of Engineers

Horizon Shipbuilding recently announced that it was awarded a contract to build a new towboat for the Army Corps of Engineers at its shipyard in Bayou La Batre.

The M/V Shorty Baird Replacement, which is a 95-foot z-drive towboat, is the most recent of three contracts awarded to the company.

In August, Horizon delivered the M/V George Grugett, a 114-foot towboat to the Army Corp., and the M/V/ General Irwin, a 48-foot towboat, in April 2012.

Horizon operates two shipyards in Bayou La Batre, with 400 full-time employees. The company manufactures steel, fiberglass and aluminum vessels for the U.S. government and private marine companies.
